Merel Holleboom is an unusual sculptor from the Netherlands. As Artist in Residence in March 2015 she made and left a beautiful sculpture in the Garden - Shiva.
In additional to art she also studied technology and automotive engineering. Merel says about herself; "I make poetic machines, a kind of toys for grown-ups. My work invites you to take part in or experience a movement. My sculptural language evolves from my fascination with mechanics and constructions. As a child I loved to watch my dad tinkering with the family car and to learn how it works. An important aspect of my sculptures is their ability to move; movement because everything moves. Even when we are standing still we are flying through space."
Merel has works in the collections of several museums and institutions and we are so lucky to have one of her works in the Garden.
